| The Importance of Eating Breakfast |
|
The very word itself implies just how important it is not to miss this meal. After having not eaten for 2 to 3 hours before bedtime, then sleeping for another 8 hours or so, it will have been 10 to 11 hours since your last meal. Therefore, in the morning you are waking from a fast, and by eating right then, you are breaking that fast.
When you are awake throughout the day, think about how long it takes you to feel hungry after eating. In most typical cases, you will begin to feel hungry after no more than 3 to 4 hours after your last meal. This is your body signaling to you that it needs nourishment. So then why would you think your body doesn't need nourishment after 10 to 11 hours without food?
Studies have shown time and time again that children who eat breakfast do better in school. This being the case, wouldn't it make sense that adults too would perform better at work if they ate breakfast as well? When you don't eat breakfast, you are more likely to become tired, low on energy and fatigued within a few hours of being at work. By mid morning, a lot of people find themselves munching on the doughnuts or any other "quick energy" sugar bomb that may be available and will usually wash it down with a cup of coffee. This may work for a short time, but when the quick rise in energy falls just as quickly as it came, you will be hungry again and probably tired again until lunch.
Not eating breakfast is also not a good way to either lose weight or maintain your current weight because eating breakfast speeds up your metabolism whereas foregoing breakfast makes your metabolism slow down. You are also more prone to snack on high in sugar, fattening snack foods and you are more likely to over eat during lunch to make up for the meal you skipped earlier and you are more likely to make poor food choices for lunch.
A good healthy breakfast doesn't have to consist of traditional "breakfast foods" like eggs and cereal, but it is important to eat a mix of high fiber carbohydrates and lean protein. Examples of a good breakfast are: eggs with some grain cereal and some honey dew melon along with some orange juice. Another is a skinless chicken breast with a baked potato and some carrots along with some fat-free milk.
If you have been eating breakfast on a regular basis, then kudos to you, but if you haven't been eating breakfast, try to remember that eating a good nutritious breakfast is the best way to start your day. Make it a point to eat breakfast for the next few mornings. Once you see how much better you feel and how much more energy you have throughout the morning, you will want to make breakfast a regular part of your day, everyday.
