| What You Should Know About Vitamins |
|
This day and age, almost everyone is into taking some multi-vitamin or another, and on top of that, a number of other individual vitamin or mineral supplements are added. For the most part, this is a good thing as long as it is not being overdone. Some people are partial to one particular brand, while others will just buy whatever is cheapest. Many swear by their brand, while others are convinced that all vitamins are the same, brand name or generic. But, are all vitamins really the same regardless of brand?
The first thing to consider is how well you will absorb the vitamins you are taking. If your body is unable to absorb the vitamins and minerals in the supplements you are taking, you are basically wasting your time and money. The cost of the product should not be a major factor when looking for something to help keep you in good health. A lot of the cheaper vitamins indicate that they have the full range of vitamins and minerals, just like their more expensive counterparts. This, however, does not mean they are necessarily just as good.
A lot of the manufacturers of the cheaper vitamin brands often buy lower grades of vitamins and minerals. What this translates to is, your body may not be able to use the full value of the supplements and may have a bad reaction to them such as smelly urine or headaches. Also, you basically wasted your money on something your body can't use effectively.
Another thing to consider is the balance of the minerals you will be getting. If you get too much of one mineral it can create an imbalance. A lot of the cheaper vitamins out there use fillers that bind the vitamins and minerals together and since your body can't digest a lot of these fillers, most of the value of the vitamins and minerals are worthless to you.
There are so many different brands of vitamin and mineral supplements to choose from out there that it can be hard to know what ones are the better choices. Sometimes it can be to your benefit to talk to a pharmacist and get their recommendation on what brands are better and talk to your doctor to find out what vitamins and minerals are best suited to your personal needs.
Something else you might want to keep in mind is the results of several studies done concerning vitamins and minerals and their absorption in the human body. According to the "physician's desk reference", only 10 to 20% of vitamins and minerals in any pill form is absorbed by the human body. Also, the national advisory board states that 100mg taken in tablet form translates to a stabilized 8.3mg or 8.3% concentrated in the blood and 11 to 20% in powder form as compared to 98% in liquid form. What this means is that liquid vitamins and minerals are clearly the best option.
One thing to remember is that the vitamin and mineral industry is a profit making business, not a charitable organization. When you are out there looking for multi-vitamins or any individual supplements, do not simply buy the ones that are the cheapest or come in the most decorative bottle. You are spending your hard earned money on something to keep you in good health. In the long run it is worth spending a little extra money for vitamins and minerals that will reap you better rewards than to spend less money on ones that will do you little to no good.
